Criminal Defense

Seasoned South Carolina litigators ready to defend you

Since 1968, the attorneys at Svalina Law Firm, P.A. have been committed to defending one's rights, interests, and freedom when arrested on any state or federal criminal charge.  If convicted, the results can mean jail time, large fines, and paying restitution to the victims.

We have extensive experience handling all types of criminal cases that range from minor infractions and misdemeanors to more serious felonies:

  • Traffic violations and driving with a suspended license.  Consequences of these crimes can affect your driving record, your ability to drive, auto insurance premiums, or ability to work as a professional driver.  An arrest and conviction for driving on a suspended license can also incur suspension of your driving privileges, fines, or jail time.
  • Drunk driving.  Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious offense that can result in suspension or loss of driver's license, fines, and possible jail time.  We fight to keep DUI charges off your driving record, keep you out of prison, and minimize fines.  Whether you are a first time or repeat offender, we fight to reach the best possible result in court.
  • Drug possession and sales.  These are felonies and the potential maximum sentence can exceed one year in jail.  Some drug offenses carry lengthy mandatory minimum prison sentences and large fines.  You need an experienced defense team when facing these kinds of charges.
  • Theft.  Theft crimes can fall under many categories.  Depending on the facts and circumstances surrounding the case, you may be charged either with a misdemeanor or with a felony.  A misdemeanor carries a penalty of fines, up to a year in jail, or both.  A felony is more serious than a misdemeanor and has more severe penalties and consequences.  We can represent you if you are charged with any kind of theft crime.
  • Larceny.  This crime is similar to theft, but involves the theft of another's property, including money that exceeds a certain amount.  If the value of the stolen item is below $2000, it is a petit larceny, and if it is more than that amount the crime is grand larceny.  The difference between the two is the size of the fine and length of jail time.  We can help you if you find yourself charged with larceny.
  • White collar fraud.  Fraud is defined as an intentional perversion of the truth and includes several variations, including credit card fraud, health care fraud, tax fraud, and computer fraud.  We can aggressively defend you.
  • Embezzlement.  This is a white collar crime that involves the taking of someone's property by a person with whom the property was entrusted.  We can represent you.
  • Sex offenses.  Sex crimes include criminal sexual conduct, sexual battery, rape and statutory rape.  Sex crimes and punishments vary depending on the age of the victim, and whether any force or violence was used in the commission of the crime.  We can assist if you are being investigated or charged with a sex offense.
  • Assaults.  Violent crimes include battery, assault, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.  Punishment for these crimes depends on the extent of the injury or if a weapon was used during the crime.  We will defend you if you have been charged with a violent crime.
  • Arson.  This is defined as any willful burning or attempting to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a house, public building, mobile home, or other property or structure, whether it belongs to the defendant or not.  If you strong representation, contact us for assistance.
